The Productivity Institute is a new £32 million investment, made possible by a grant from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), focusing on delivering research that improves productivity and living standards across the whole of the UK economy. The research programme will aim to identify the causes of the UK productivity puzzle, and propose ways to improve productivity to the benefit of all. It will do this through strong regional engagement with stakeholders across the whole of the UK.
The Productivity Institute is establishing eight Regional Productivity Forums across the UK, with Queen’s University Belfast leading the creation and running of the Northern Ireland Productivity Forum. Project Objectives:
The Northern Ireland Productivity Forum includes representatives from the region’s key sectors, including manufacturing and technology as well as from the public sector and academia. It has four main objectives:
- Agenda setting: identifying topics and issues that have important implications for regional productivity, and being spaces where businesses, policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders can come together to debate productivity issues and identify solutions.
- Research translation: advising the Productivity Institute on how emerging research findings can be translated into practical recommendations for businesses, policy makers and other stakeholders to implement.
- Co-production: developing and overseeing research projects that improve understanding of key regional productivity challenges and shape the actions of business, policymakers and other stakeholders regionally and nationally.
- Collaboration: working as part of a national network to identify shared research and policy issues, and amplify the regional voice in national productivity research and policy debates.
